About IU South Bend Elkhart Center

The IUSB Occupational Therapy program will be in the Elkhart Center located at 125 E. Franklin Street, Elkhart, Indiana. This building was opened in 2007 and designed by IUSB to create a center for graduate health education programs including nurse practitioners, speech language pathology, and occupational therapy. The Community Foundation of the Regional Cities Initiative of Northwest Indiana provided $600,000 to convert this space into clinic space for speech language pathology and occupational therapy.

Laboratories and Classrooms at Elkhart Center

The IUSB occupational therapy graduate program has three dedicated laboratory spaces designed for hands-on learning.

1. The Sensorimotor Laboratory is 817 square feet laboratory with large windows and ample storage cabinets in the room. There are two folding mat tables that can fold down for treatment interventions and a weight-tested suspension system setup for vestibular movement. An 80-inch LCD television with computer will serve as the ‘screen’ in the room to allow students to see demonstrations ‘close up’ via video technology.

2. The Activities of Daily Living Laboratory is 882 square feet and designed as an efficiency apartment living space. This lab includes a working kitchen including an electric stove, refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, kitchen cabinets, bed, nightstand, and dresser. This room allows students to simulate at-home activities and occupations. There are large windows, natural lighting, and ample storage throughout the room for ADL equipment. An 80-inch LCD television with computer will serve as the ‘screen’ in the room to allow students to see demonstrations ‘close up’ via video technology.

3. The Bathroom/Laundry Laboratory room is 121 square feet of working bathroom with a tub/shower, toilet, kitchen sink and vanity, and washer and dryer. This room will allow students to practice bathroom safety performance including transfers in/out of the tub/shower and on and off the toilet. This space is also equipped with bathroom safety equipment.

In addition to the above designated teaching spaces, classes will be held in two large teaching classrooms. Each of the two classrooms is approximately 900 square feet with several windows providing natural light.
