We’re happy for this opportunity to introduce you to our dental hygiene program and the degrees we offer here at IU South Bend. As the premier public institution of higher education in the area, the mission of the program is to prepare students for entry-level positions as clinical dental hygienists and to get students to begin thinking about the many career roles of the dental hygienist with a bachelor's degree.

The Dental Hygiene Clinic and externships provide the opportunity for students to deliver preventive oral health services to the community of Michiana. The Dental Hygiene curricula leads to the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH).

Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene Entry-Level

The IU South Bend campus offers two pathways to a baccalaureate degree. The Entry Level BSDH is designed for those preparing to enter the profession with a four year degree. This degree program is two years of prerequisite courses followed by two years in the professional program. With workforce demands increasing and the job market in the area tightening, marketability is of concern for dental hygienists. The professsion of dental hygiene is a strong profession leading to many career opportunities outside of clinical practice. The BSDH degree will provide greater mobility and career options to those who choose to pursue it.

Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene Degree Completion

The Degree Completion BSDH is for licensed hygienists who are already graduates of an accredited Associate Degree Dental Hygiene program, and wish to continue their education and enhance their career opportunities. This plan of study will provide additional educational training beyond that obtained in an Associate Degree program. Many of the dental hygiene courses can now be completed online. Applicants interested in the BSDH completion degree should contact the Dental Hygiene Program Director for more information and advising.
